Dog Days at Governor’s Island, NYC

SIBE LIFE | Dog-friendly days at Governor's Island

Every pup has its day, and this time, it’s Winter Dog Days at Governor’s Island! Dogs can ride the ferry and explore the island’s 172 acres for the first time! Gatsby has never been on a ferry before, so I was excited to let him experience it with his pup friends. Before you take your furry best friend on this adventure, here’s what you need to know.

Rules for Winter Dog Days at Governor’s Island

  • All dogs and their owners must ride in one of the outdoor sections of the ferry.
  • Your dogs must remain on a leash on the ferry and on Governor’s Island except for the designated dog park behind Liggett Terrace.
  • Your pups are not allowed in indoor spaces on Governors Island.
  • Pick up your dog’s waste!

When are Winter Dog Days at Governor’s Island?

Dogs are allowed only on Saturdays starting from January 22 through April 30, from 7 am to 3 pm. Isn’t it a bummer that dogs aren’t allowed during the warmer months?! Since this was a seasonal pilot, I’m hoping the rules would change so that dogs can enjoy the island all year round in the future.

How to get to Governor’s Island with your dog

On the ferry to Governor’s Island

The Manhattan ferry to Governor’s Island is located on 10 South Street, Slip 7. If you are driving into Manhattan, I suggest you park at 55 Old Slip (55 Water Street Garage). Free parking is possible but hard to find!

If you are taking the subway, you can take:

  • 1 train to South Ferry Stop
  • 4, 5 train to Nowling Green Stop
  • R train to Whitehall Street

How much is the ferry ride to Governor’s Island

The ferry ride is $3 for adults. Seniors, children, and your pup ride for free. Want a free ride? You can ride the ferry for free with your pup on Saturdays and Sundays before noon.

Tip: It’s best to purchase your tickets online to save time waiting in long lines. Advance reservations are strongly encouraged as per the website. Also, boarding is 15 minutes before your ferry departure time.

Socialize with other pups in the dog park

Dog Park at Governor’s Island

Right behind Liggett Terrace, there’s a fenced-in designated dog park for your pup to run around and hang out with other pups. The dog park isn’t separated between small and big dogs.

Stroll around the Island

The Maze Challenge at Governor’s Island

Stroll the 2.1-mile promenade around the whole island with your pup. It takes about 44 minutes to complete the loop.

Enjoy the Manhattan skyline

Governor’s island offers incredible views of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

Take photos with your pup

It’s not every day your pup gets to ride on a ferry to explore the island that’s only open to dogs a few months of the year! Capture these special moments!

I was told that there’s a Winter Village with an ice skating rink during the colder months. We didn’t get a chance to experience that since we visited towards the end of the season. We had a great time riding the ferry and exploring Governor’s Island with Gatsby and our friends. Hopefully, the rules change next year so that we can explore during the warmer months with our pups when there are more activities like Jazz parties and flea markets to enjoy!
