The Getaway House: A Dog-Friendly Escape from NYC

SIBE LIFE | Dog-Friendly Getaway House

If you live in a busy city like NYC with your pup and want to spend some time away from the stresses, I recommend heading to the Getaway House, which is dog-friendly! In September of 2019, we celebrated Gatsby’s first Gotcha Day there. I wanted to take him to a destination where he could explore, dig his paws into the soft grounds, and be surrounded by nature.

What is the Getaway House

SIBE LIFE | Dog-Friendly Getaway House

The Getaway House offers the experience of a tiny home in the woods as an escape from your hectic life. The stay encourages you to disconnect, use less technology, and get outside more while spending quality time to bond with your loved ones. It’s an ideal time to take a social media break!

What are the Getaway House locations?

There are so many locations across the U.S. We decided on the Boston outpost located in Epsom, New Hampshire, since we wanted to visit our friends in downtown Boston after our stay.

Here are the Getaway House locations. Each is about two hours outside of major cities.

  • Atlanta
  • Austin + San Antonio
  • Boston
  • Charlotte + Raleigh
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • Los Angeles
  • New York
  • Pittsburgh
  • Cleveland
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Washington D.C.

What is included in the Getaway House?

Each Getaway house location has a campground layout with a cute tiny house-inspired cabin and parking.

Your getaway house includes the bare essentials like a fire pit, picnic table, and Adirondack chairs. Each cabin has one or two queen-sized beds, a shower, toilet, a lock pad on the door, electricity, and heat/air-conditioning. It also comes with a kitchenette that contains everything you need to prepare a meal. Keep in mind that there is no WiFi here!

How much will the Getaway House cost?

Prices range from $99 and up per night, depending on the time of year or days of the week you want to book (summer and weekends are usually the priciest times). There is a $40 pet fee per stay, and your dog will receive some dog amenities such as a dog bowl, treats, waste bags, and an outdoor lead, so you won’t be worried about them running off into the woods. Check-in is at 3 PM.

Things to do at the Getaway house

Go Hiking

If you booked the Boston outpost in Epsom, New Hampshire, drive to Bear Brook State Park, about a 20-minute drive. With over 10,000 acres to explore, your pup will love it. There were so many new smells, wildlife, and trails for Gatsby to explore. Birds chirping and singing, tiny wildlife footsteps running through the forest, and water flowing down the streams were loud and clear. We let Gatsby do what he does best: lead the way.

Take a Nap

Some of you might think it’s a waste of time to nap, but it’s not! This is the time to relax, unwind and refresh. Sleeping in a cabin deep in the woods has such a different vibe! Plus, it was raining the first day we got there, so all we did was hang out in the cabin. We listened to music, chatted away, and fell asleep to the sounds of raindrops hitting our window early that night.

Have a cookout by the campfire

Grill some food and hang out by the campfire! There’s comfort in listening to the fire crackling, crickets chirping, and the wind carrying the smells of the woods right to you.

Stargazing

Watch the stars at night with your pup and make memories.

Tip:

It is pitch black out there when the sun goes down! Even though a lantern is provided, bring a few bright flashlights! You’ll need it when walking your pup at night if they need to pee or poop.

What to Pack

  • Bug Spray
  • Lantern
  • Elevated dog camping bed – to keep your pup clean from the muddy grounds
  • Hiking boots
  • Sneakers
  • Canopy if rain is expected
  • Bring foods to make
  • Food for your pup
  • A bottle of wine or two
  • Umbrella and canopy if rain is expected
  • Extra towel
  • Dog Travel Road Trip Must-Haves

Recap of our stay at the Getaway House

On the morning of our last day at the Getaway house, I had my coffee and fed Gatsby his breakfast outside. It was a chilly morning. Gatsby and I sat at the picnic table, took a deep breath, and enjoyed this moment. I turned to him, kissed him, and asked, “Did you have a good time? We’re leaving soon” He took a whiff of the earthy woods, turned over, and licked me on my cheeks. I was content. These are the moments that will live in my memories forever.
