All Aboard the Dog-Friendly Jim Thorpe Train Ride Adventure

When you’re in the mood for a perfect day that combines history, nature, and your dog, the Jim Thorpe train ride at the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in Pennsylvania checks all the boxes. I finally took my pup Gatsby to ride an old school diesel engine train and it was the cutest thing to see him experience the train ride.

Tucked away in the picturesque town of Jim Thorpe, this historic railway isn’t just a scenic journey through the Lehigh Gorge; it’s a dog-friendly adventure that promises an unforgettable time with your pup. So, grab your pup’s leash and your sense of adventure, and let’s dive into this fun experience!

History of Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Town of Jim Thorpe, PA

The charming town of Jim Thorpe has a rich history. It was once a bustling coal-mining hub, but its name changed to honor the legendary athlete Jim Thorpe. Today, it’s an attraction for history and nature lovers alike.

As for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, it started way back in 1827 as the Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad for moving coal. But it soon became a hit for passengers who wanted scenic rides. Over the years, it became the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad, offering fun rides and special events. Today, it’s still a fantastic place to experience history and the beauty of the Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Pet Policy Jim Thorpe Train Ride In Pennsylvania

Dogs are allowed only in the standard coach and open-air cars with bench seating that offers a nice breeze. They must be kept on a leash at all times. Definitely choose the open-air option so your pup gets all the sniffing opportunities!

Where To Park Your Car

Plan ahead and arrive at least an hour earlier before your train ride. It was packed when we arrived, and it was only 9:30 a.m.

You’ll immediately see Jim Thorpe’s old railroad station when you arrive. Park your car at the municipal parking lot and pay at the kiosks located throughout the lot. Just make sure you are parking in the all-day zone (costs $12) and not in the two-hour limit zone!

Purchasing Tickets for the Jim Thorpe Train Ride

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway Tickets

Trains leave from the historic downtown Jim Thorpe’s old railroad station, and you can find the train schedule on their website. I would suggest purchasing your tickets online so you can secure a seat. The open-air cars sell out quick! Tickets are $24 each for the open-air cars. Dog ride for free.

If you decide to purchase your tickets online, you still need to go to the ticket window, show them proof of purchase, and obtain a physical ticket. The cutest thing is that your pup will get a free ticket, and you can write their name on it!

A Ride to Remember

As you and your pup get comfy in the open-air car, the rhythmic sound of wheels on the tracks adds a nostalgic vibe to the adventure. Powered by old-school diesel engines, the 16-mile route follows the river and lasts about 70 minutes. You’ll get a breathtaking Lehigh Gorge State Park tour with high-rising cliffs, mountain scenery, and white water rafting along the rivers.

Before getting on the train, make sure to get a photo of your pup with one of the train conductors!

Fall and Holiday Jim Thorpe Train Rides

Fall train rides at Jim Thorpe are the perfect way to see fantastic fall foliage. Then, you have the Christmas train ride with Santa during November and December. I am definitely coming back for the Santa train ride with Gatsby!

According to the website, no advanced ticket sales will occur during the fall and holiday rides. Tickets must be purchased at the ticket booth on a first-come, first-serve basis.

It’s not a dog-friendly spot, but it’s still an excellent place for a quick photo and to admire from afar. The Harry Packer Mansion, constructed in 1874, is a historic mansion. It was the inspiration for Disney’s haunted mansion.

Once a home belonging to a wealthy family, this mansion has transformed into a charming 12-bedroom Inn. They now host “Murder Mystery” events every weekend.

Where to Eat

After the train ride and adventures in Jim Thorpe, you’ll probably be hungry, and your pup might be too. There is a nice park right in front of the train station, and it’s an excellent spot for a picnic if you bring your own food. A few local food vendors also offered smoked BBQ, burgers, hot dogs, and even Italian pastries.
