3 Best Harnesses For A Siberian Husky

Siberian Husky in Central Park NYC

Harnesses are the best for dogs who love to pull like Siberian Huskies. Unlike collars, they won’t cause injury to the trachea. When looking for the best harnesses for a Siberian Husky, they must have support, versatility, and durability. I’ve tried so many brands and types of gear. At this point, I think I have finally found the ones Gatsby will be wearing for a while.

Best Harnesses For A Siberian Husky

1. Ruffwear Front Range Harness

The Front Range Harness by Ruffwear quickly became one of our favorites because it provides enough padding for chest support and all-day comfort while also providing a full range of motion. It’s versatile enough for walks in the city, our hiking adventures, and morning jogs. Plus, it’s durable and strong but not bulky. This is a good everyday harness. Gatsby is 60 pounds and wears a size medium.

The harness has two leash attachment options:

  1. An aluminum V-ring centered on the dog’s back – I use this option when I take Gatsby jogging, hiking on light trails and strolls in the city.
  2. Front clip webbing at the dog’s chest – This option is supposed to discourage your Husky from pulling. Gatsby doesn’t pull AS much when we use this option. It’s also great for when we are walking through the super crowded streets of NYC so that I can keep him right next to me.

2. Embark Pets Adventure Harness

The adventure harness by Embark Pets is very similar to the Ruffwear front range harness but a bit more affordable. It’s lightweight easy to put on and adjust. We’ve started using it a lot more than the Ruffwear because it’s much more padded for comfort. Plus, it has a top control handle, which helps make it easier when I need to hold Gatsby back from something.

3. CTC Shoulder Harness Ripstop

Another harness we love to use is from CTC Dog Gear. All of their gear is designed by a dryland specialist with 22 years of on-trail experience and has been tested by their own group of Siberian Huskies. The Shoulder Harness Ripstop is another versatile harness. We purchased it for bikejoring but have been using it a lot for walks in the city too. You can use this for canicrossing, hiking, walking, and swimming. The padding is thick and also waterproof. Gatsby wears a medium.

If you plan on purchasing this harness from CTC Dog Gear just know that all of their orders have a minimum lead time of 15 working days (3 weeks). This lead time will change to 6 weeks in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb because that’s their busiest time of year (they juggle their dog gear business and training of sled dogs). All orders will be shipped as soon as the order is ready. A tracking number will be emailed on the day your order is shipped. Trust me, this harness is worth the wait!

We’ve tested many other brands and have also tried a harness from Julius K9. I initially purchased the Julius K9 harness because I thought the personalized patch idea was pretty cool. Until I realized that the harness really didn’t provide the right chest padding and support for Gatsby.

Be Extremely Cautious When Shopping Harnesses For Your Siberian Husky

Always make sure the leash attachments on the harnesses are sewn in very well and can handle a large pulling breed. We recently were testing out a new harness on the trails. An off-leash dog ran up to Gatsby and then ran away. Gatsby lunged forward, wanting to play with the other dog. As soon as that happened, the D-ring on the harness snapped right off. Needless to say, I was frantic. I was scared I would lose him in the woods, and he wouldn’t come back. Thankfully, other hikers helped me get a hold of him.

Another thing is to always check your dog’s gear before leaving your home. Materials can wear out over time with excessive pulling.

Final Thoughts

When you bring home a new dog, it’s exciting to go shopping for gear. You’ll naturally gravitate to the ones that look cool, pretty, etc. But, does the product help you achieve your goals? Is it durable, versatile and does it provide optimal support and all-day comfort for your Siberian Husky?
