There’s always a whole lot of things going on in Bryant Park. During late Fall and Winter, get ready to experience the Winter Village if you’re visiting! You’ll love the holiday markets and drinks by the ice skating rink.

When visiting during the warmer months, play chess, board games (you can borrow board games and more on the Fifth Avenue Terrace in front of the New York Public Library), ping pong, or relax and soak in the sun on the lawn with your pup.

Prefer not to lie on the grass in the hot sun? There are a ton of tables and chairs around with umbrellas to keep you and your pup cool.

FIY: Bryant Park has one of the cleanest public restrooms in NYC!

Washington Square Park

Dog-Friendly Washington Square Park
Washington Square Park, NYC

Dedicated to George Washington, this expansive 9.75-acre public park includes playful children’s areas to lush gardens, winding paths, a designated chess spot, inviting benches, and convenient picnic tables. There are not just one but two well-designed dog runs.

The park is always packed, resonating with the lively energy that defines New York. Melodies fill the air as musicians perform, people lay on the grassy lawns and catch a tan, and the pups run free as they play with other New Yorker pups at the dog run.

Snap a photo as you make your way beneath the iconic Washington Arch at Fifth Avenue on the north side!

Hudson River Park

Hudson River Park, NYC

Stretching all the way from 59th Street down to Battery Park, Hudson River Park has 550 acres, spanning an impressive 4.5-mile stretch. This makes it Manhattan’s second-largest park, trailing behind only Central Park in size.

This extensive waterfront playground offers lots of dining options, piers, and not one but several dedicated dog runs.

Make sure you stop by Rooftop Park at Pier 57. Opened in the Spring of 2022, the 80,000-square-foot rooftop park at Pier 57 is New York City’s largest rooftop park. Enjoy the rooftop with your dog and get amazing city views, Little Island Park (allows service dogs only), and the Hudson River.

Check out our experience below at Rooftop Park Pier 57.

Tompkins Square Park

This lively park in the East Village has well-maintained and updated facilities. You’ll find handball courts, playgrounds, picnic spots, and a dog run.

The dog run thrives due to its vibrant community. This active group shares updates, raises funds and diligently works together to safeguard the park.

Inwood Hill Park

Inwood Hill Park is home to the last significant natural forested area on Manhattan Island. Unlike many other urban parks, this one retains its natural character with hills and wooded surroundings fully non-landscaped.

You’ll also find the Inwood Hill Park Dog Run, also known as Homer’s Run, backed by its nonprofit advocacy group. This community shares lots of insights, suggestions, and valuable resources for a dog-friendly life in Inwood.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park, Upper West Side NYC

Nestled along the Hudson River on the Upper West Side, this charming waterfront park stretches for four miles, spanning from 72nd to 158th streets. It has three dog runs, restaurants, skate parks, sports fields, and many walking and biking paths.

If you’re feeling hungry, Pier 1 Cafe is the perfect spot to grab some food. During the warmer months, there are tons of outdoor seating!

Parks in Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Jane's Carousel Brooklyn Bridge Park
Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn NYC

This waterfront park has a sprawling great lawn for picnics, space for dogs to explore, and is home to the famous whimsical carousel – Jane’s Carousel. You’ll find “Time Out Market” where you can grab food with your dog to enjoy outside by the lawn or on the upper roof deck for epic NYC views.

Situated in the charming neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO, the park is divided into eleven distinct sections: Piers 1 through 6, Fulton Ferry Landing, Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, Empire Fulton Ferry, Main Street, and John Street.

North 5th Street Pier and Park

Dog Friendly Park in New York City | North Williamsburg

With breathtaking views of the New York City skyline and the East River, this park is at the North Williamsburg NYC Ferry stop. Many photographers, local residents, and dog lovers will be relaxing by the waterfront. Walk along the piers with your pup, head to North Williamsburg, and explore the shops and restaurants there.

Domino Park

Domino Park is perched along the East River at 15 River Street and offers fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline, a dog park, and a taco stand. Created out of the old Domino Sugar Factory, this riverfront oasis is a recent addition to the neighborhood’s landscape.

The Domino Park Dog Run can be found on the park’s south side, near River Street and just north of South 5th Street. It’s clean for your pup and has excellent city views for you.

After the dog park, take the elevated path to savor views of the Williamsburg Bridge to the south and the majestic Manhattan skyline to the west. And, of course, if you’re in the mood for some tacos, you must try Tacocina!

Prospect Park

Prospect Park House

Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s most iconic park. It offers 526 acres of green space to explore and a dog beach!

For those wanting to connect with fellow Prospect Park dog enthusiasts, you must check out FIDO. As New York City’s biggest off-leash community, they orchestrate various events annually. Coffee Bark is a monthly meeting where dog owners mingle, share stories and indulge in coffee, pastries, and dog treats.

McCarren Park

Situated between Greenpoint and Williamsburg, McCarren Park is a Brooklyn landmark. With 35 acres, this park is a hub of vibrant activity, complete with a designated dog run, bocce courts, and a bustling community pool. It’s a well-known spot for sports enthusiasts, sun tanners, and those out for a leisurely dog walk in a lively atmosphere.

Fort Green Park

Named as Brooklyn’s first park back in 1847, this park carries a rich historical legacy. If your pup has good recall, off-leash hours are from the park opening to 9:00 a.m and from 9:00 p.m. until the park closes.

Parks in Queens

Dog Friendly New York City Parks | Long Island City Gantry Plaza State Park
Long Island City, Queens NY

Gantry State Park

The best views of the Manhattan skyline are either from Queens or New Jersey. Head across the East River to Queens by riding the NYC Ferry with your pup, and you will arrive in Long Island City, Gantry State Park.

Walk alongside the East River and picnic on the grassy lawns with epic Manhattan skyline views.

Your pup can also run off-leash at Hunter’s Point South Dog Run, Center Blvd., and 51st Ave.

Astoria Park

Also across the East River, Astoria Park is between the Triborough Bridge and Hell Gate Bridge in Queens County. One of its highlights is New York City’s oldest and largest swimming pool, drawing in huge crowds in the summer.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Home of the USTA (United States Tennis Association) and where the U.S. Open is played, Flushing Meadows Corona Park is the largest park in Queens. It also connects to CitiFied, where the New York Mets play. Come to check out the sports fields, hike the trails, bike, and relax by the lakes. There are 897 acres of space for you and your pup to explore.

Restaurants

Note: NYC laws state that only service dogs are allowed inside food establishments. All NON-SERVICE DOGS must dine at the outdoor seating. This means the best time to eat with your dog is during the warmer months in April to October. However, since COVID-19, more restaurants have created heated outdoor seating. You can learn about the rules of dining with your dog in NYC here.

In New York City, most restaurants with outdoor dining areas and patios will allow your dog to join you. Below are a few of my favorite dog-friendly New York City restaurants to dine with my pup, Gatsby.

The Wilson, NYC

The Wilson is the most dog-friendly restaurant in New York City. Why? Because, they have a dog menu! All the names of their specialty cocktails and mocktails are dog themed. They are the only restaurant in NYC with a separate enclosed eating area with heat lamps in the winter. It is a must visit!

Location: 132 W 27th St, New York, NY 10001

See our Instagram reel when we visited for brunch below:

Shake Shack at Madison Square Park

Dog Friendly New York City Restaurant Shake Shack Madison Square Park

This Shake Shack located at Madison Square Park is a must-visit in NYC with your pup. With plenty of outdoor seating and heating lamps in the Winter, it’s the perfect spot to grab a casual meal with your dog. Don’t forget to order your dog a Shake Shack Poochini, a vanilla custard with a Bocce’s biscuit. My pup Gatsby is their #1 Poochini customer.

Felice NYC

My other go-to for dinner is Felice NYC. They serve classic Italian dishes inspired by the traditional cuisine of the Tuscan countryside. Try all their Italian classics crafted using the finest, freshest produce available. There are several locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn Heights, with plenty of outdoor seating available for your pup to join you.

Brooklyn Location:

  • Felice  Montague: 84 Montague St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

T. Brasserie

For French cuisine, my favorite place to dine with my pup during the warmer months is T. Brasserie by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Located in The Tin Building in the Seaport District, they do not disappoint with fine dining. I love their atmosphere and service. It also offers the most shading on a hot summer day. Their food is fantastic!

Location: Tin Building 96 South St, New York, NY 10038

When we dine here in the summer, our go-to is the caviar hash brown, soft shell crab, and a lobster salad.

Location: Pier 25 Hudson River, New York, NY 10013

LouLou NYC is a French bistro with a cocktail lounge is located on the corner of 19th Street and 8th Avenue in the heart of Chelsea. The decor inside and out is gorgeous. The front entrance is always draped with flowers, and it’s one of the most Instagrammable bistros in NYC. My favorite menu item is their croissant french toast. If you come here for lunch (Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), you have to try the Speck, which is smoked ham, arugula, black pepper ricotta, and caramelized onion on a flatbread. It was so good I didn’t share it with anyone! I had the opportunity to meet the owner, Mathias Van Leyden. He told me he named his bistro after his adorable rescue dog!

Location: 176 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011

The Smith Restaurant at Nomad

Dog-friendly New York City Restaurant | Smith Nomad
Waiting to be seated at The Smith Nomad, NYC

The “Gatsby” cocktail, made of gin, pomegranate, hibiscus, lemon, and prosecco, is a must-try! Also, brunch portions here are huge!

Location: 1150 Broadway, New York, NY 10001

Mekong BK

Dog-Friendly New York city restaurant | Mekong Brooklyn NYC
Mekong, Brooklyn NYC

If you’re looking for the best Vietnamese restaurant after a walk at Fort Greene Park with your pup, Mekong in Brooklyn is a must-try. I come here quite often. In my opinion, Mekong beats all other Vietnamese restaurants in NYC! Every menu item I’ve ever tried was excellent. The outdoor seating area is nice because it’s fenced, preventing Gatsby from interacting with other dogs during their walks.

Location: 250 Dekalb Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205

Dino

Dog-friendly New York City Restaurants | Dino

A Northern Italian restaurant, Dino is also located in the heart of Fort Greene. After walking Fort Greene Park with your pup, it’s another excellent dining spot. My go-to is their Rigatoni Ragú. Chateau Le Woof

Not precisely in Manhattan, Chateau Le Woof is located in Astoria, Queens. It’s a short NYC ferry ride from the city that brings you across the East River. It’s a nice ride where you and your dog will see the entire New York City skyline.

Come by for brunch, grab a coffee or latte, and watch your pup socialize in the gated indoor play area.

Bars

With so many restaurants offering outdoor seating, we hardly go to any bars. We just grab a drink at the restaurants. But here are a few dog-friendly New York City bars some of the locals love to take their pups to.

Dog Parks / Dog Runs

Dog Parks and Dog Runs In New York City
Petco Flagship Store, Union Square NYC

New York City has plenty of dog parks to go around. Here’s a list below of a few that we really enjoy and find to be much cleaner than some others.

Dog Park Etiquette: Make sure your dog is current on vaccines. You never know what diseases they can catch in one of these dog parks. Be mindful and look after your dog. Don’t play fetch with your dog in dog parks because some dogs may have a resource guarding issue.

Make sure that your dog can socialize with other pups before you enter. The last thing you want is to end your NYC trip with a visit to the emergency vet if a dog fight occurs.

Lastly, pick up after your dog. It’s the right thing to do.

Union Square Green Market, NYC

Green Markets

The best place in NYC to grab fresh apple pie, doughnuts, hot apple cider, or pumpkin spice everything during the Fall is at one of NYC’s Greenmarkets. The most popular green market is in Union Square. We visit here frequently, and it’s also a great place to buy affordable organic veggies that are in season. Get there earlier in the day for the best selection of your favorite treats and to avoid the large crowds.

If you are in the Brooklyn area, visit the green market at Grand Army Plaza.

  • The Union Square Green Market – open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

During the summer months, NYC hosts a bunch of street festivals that pop up all over the city. These festivals usually switch between different neighborhoods every other weekend.

Food vendors sell fried Oreos, Mexican corn, ice-cold lemonade, and thirst-quenching watermelon slices. Local businesses will also sell handmade handbags, jewelry, and much more.

The streets get pretty crowded, so make sure you have your pup leashed and keep an eye out for street food on the floor so your dog won’t try to eat scraps off the ground!

Sightseeing

Take a Tour of NYC

A tour is the way to go if you want to learn more about New York City. And guess what? There are plenty of tours that you can even bring your dog along on!

When you’re planning to join a guided tour, make sure to let the company know in advance that your dog will attend. This way, you can get an official go-ahead from the tour operator.

Walk The Brooklyn Bridge From DUMBO to Manhattan

Dog Friendly New York City Walk Over the Brooklyn Bridge

Enjoy the skyline of downtown Manhattan, and admire the iconic architecture as you and your pup walk across the Brooklyn Bridge! I recommend starting the walk from the Manhattan side so you can walk across to Brooklyn and enjoy the DUMBO area.

Dumbo stands for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” and it’s a trendy neighborhood filled with cobblestone streets. Make sure you head to Washington Street for an Instagrammable shot in front of the Manhattan Bridge. After Washington Street, stop by Brooklyn Bridge Park to find Jane’s Carousel and Pebble Beach just around the corner for photo ops!

To walk the Brooklyn Bridge from DUMBO to Manhattan, take a stairway in the underpass on Washington Street, 2 blocks from Front Street, where the famous DUMBO Instagram photo is.

Times Square

Siberian Husky with Times Square New York City back drop.

Times Square is best known for bright lights, skyscrapers plastered with digital billboards, the theatre district, and NYC’s New Year’s Eve venue. The big crowds and bright lights just give off big energy! That song “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay Z is what comes to my mind every time I’m in Times Square with Gatsby.

Notable Locations:

  • Times Square steps on 47th Street and Broadway
  • Subway Entrance on 42nd Street and Broadway
  • 45th Street and Broadway Street View

Roosevelt Island

Dog Friendly New York City Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island is this little island in the East River of NYC between Manhattan to the west and Queens on Long Island City to the east. It’s a must visit if you’re into cherry blossoms and visiting New York City during mid-March through May.

To get to Roosevelt Island, take the NYC Ferry Astoria Line.

Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons in New York City. For a detailed list, read my blog post for dog-friendly Winter things to do in NYC and dog-friendly Fall things to do in NYC.

Here are a few of my favorite seasonal activities with my pup, Gatsby:

Shop the Christmas Markets In NYC

Dog Friendly New York City Holiday Markets

If you’re looking to find unique gifts in New York City, then the Christmas Markets will be the best place to find them. The vendors are primarily small businesses offering unique handmade or local goods. You can find jewelry, specialty foods (even treats for your pup), spices and teas, and handcrafted goods.

Best Outdoor NYC Christmas Markets:

  • Winter Village at Bryant Park
  • Union Square Holiday Market
  • Columbus Circle Holiday Market

Best Indoor NYC Christmas Market

  • The Holiday Fair at Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal

Go to A Drive In Movie Theater

Drive to Skyline Drive-In and watch a movie with your pup in your car! This place also offers killer views of the Manhattan Skyline. Listen to the movie’s sound through your car’s stereo or use Skyline Drive-In’s rentable radio.

If you are visiting NYC without a car, no worries! You can bring your own chair or even rent one.

Tompkins Square Halloween Parade

Even if you and your pup won’t want to wear a costume, this traditional parade is worth going to! You can check out dogs of all sizes and ages wearing super creative costumes. They all come to battle it out for best costume with hopes of taking home epic prizes. There are tons of contestants, spectators, celebrity hosts, and judges.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

If your dog is OK with large crowds, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is such a fun experience. You’ll enjoy seeing giant character balloons, floats, and performances. It starts at 77th Street and Central Park West and then marches down 2.5 miles.

The parade goes from Central Park West to Columbus Circle, turning onto Central Park South and then down 6th Avenue/Avenue of the Americas. At 34th Street, the Parade will make its final turn west and end at 7th Avenue in front of Macy’s Herald Square.

Take Your Pup to A Ball Game

The Mets usually host a “Bark at the Park” event where your dog can join you and enjoy a baseball game. The coolest part is that they allow the dogs to walk the field and provide some dog-friendly freebies.
