Ah, winter in New York City – it’s a magical experience that’s straight out of a holiday movie. Having lived in NYC all my life, it’s my favorite time of the year. From ice skating at Rockefeller Center to sipping hot cocoa in Central Park, the Big Apple is full of festive cheer this time of year. You’ll want to pack wisely to make the most of your holiday adventure. Here’s a guide on what to pack for New York City winters. And if you decided to bring your pup, I have a section for them towards the end of the post too!
New York City Winter Packing Essentials
Winter Coat
Imagine being freezing and unable to explore all NYC offers, like outdoor holiday markets, the Rockefeller Christmas tree, and the gorgeous Central Park. It will ruin your mood and trip! Here’s my go-to winter-insulated parka that I’ve had for years! You can never go wrong with The North Face’s winter jackets!
If you’re looking for an athleisure look, Alo Yoga is my favorite brand to shop. I got their ice breaker puffer jacket, and it was warm enough for those frigid days. I also love their faux fur and sherpa coats!

Warm Layers
New York winters can be freezing, so pack your warmest layers. Think chunky sweaters or sweatshirts and turtlenecks! Turtleneck sweaters are great because that means you won’t need to wear a scarf! Also, bring some thermal undershirts and thermal leggings for those days with freezing temps!
Comfortable Walking Shoes
You’ll be doing a lot of walking, from admiring holiday window displays to strolling through Central Park. Opt for comfy yet stylish boots or sneakers with good traction to navigate the city streets. With the chance of unexpected snow or rain, it’s a good idea to go for waterproof ones. My favorite comfy sneakers are these cute white sneakers by Madewell that can match almost any outfit.
When it’s not snowing or raining, a pair of Uggs is perfect for walking around the city while keeping your feet warm. Combat boots are another great option! If you plan on heading out to an upscale place, an ankle bootie or over-the-knee boot is your best bet.
Festive Attire
If you’re visiting NYC during Christmas, it calls for a touch of holiday spirit in your wardrobe. Pack something with cream, silver, and red colors to embrace the holiday vibes.
Evening Glam
If you plan to attend holiday parties or catch a Broadway show, don’t forget to pack your evening attire. A classy dress or a sharp suit will ensure you’re ready for a night in the city. It will be COLD, so pack a nice warm dressy coat.
Minimal Makeup
MERIT Beauty has the best minimal travel makeup! With MERIT’s minimalistic approach using the Five Minute Morning Set, you’ll spend less time in front of the mirror and more time exploring New York City!
Accessories
Accessorize to stay both stylish and warm. Bring a cozy scarf, gloves, and a stylish hat to complete your winter look. Don’t forget a pair of sunglasses for those sunny winter days.
A Portable Charger
Your phone’s battery might drain quickly with all the photo opportunities and navigating through the city. A portable charger is a lifesaver to keep your device juiced up.
A Crossbody Bag
Be hands-free! A crossbody bag is not only stylish but also practical for keeping your essentials secure while you explore the city. Especially if you’re traveling with your dog! Here are some stylish crossbody bags that won’t break the bank.
Day Backpack
I have a day backpack/camera bag, and it’s essential for me. This camera bag by Brevite is where I keep all my content creation gear, laptop, and small travel essentials. It’s big enough for me to pack some winter accessories as well.
Sunglasses
While winters in NYC can often bring gray skies, it’s not always cloudy and gloomy. There are those extremely sunny days, and let’s not forget the sun glare from the sun reflecting off the snow and ice. I would get some cheap sunglasses instead of bringing the expensive ones, so you won’t lose them on a flight or when you forget them somewhere.
Travel Umbrella
New York weather can be unpredictable. Pack a high-quality compact travel umbrella to stay dry in case of rain or snow and when it gets super windy.
Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is vital when traveling. Invest in a filtered and self-cleaning reusable water bottle. My favorite is the Larq water bottle because it uses UV-C light technology to kill the bacteria and viruses lurking in your bottle.
If you want something smaller and less bulky, this flat water bottle is great choice.
Hand Warmers
Trust me, when the temperature dips below freezing, these little heat warmers are essential for an enjoyable day of sightseeing.
Just pop them into your gloves, tuck them into your coat pockets, or slip them inside your boots. You’ll feel instant warmth that will keep you toasty as you explore the city.
Hand Sanitizing Wipes
As much as I love New York City, it’s a pretty dirty city. Forget about the hand-sanitizing gels. You want to bring sanitizing wipes instead to remove any grime and dirt on your hands.
Personal Alarm Key Chain
You know I have to keep it real with you…unfortunately since 2020, crime has soared in the streets of NYC. Carrying a personal alarm gives you peace of mind. It’s a reliable alternative to pepper spray when traveling solo or if you’re out late at night and walking back to your hotel. Just pull the pin, and a loud alarm will go off, scaring away anyone who might be up to no good and letting others know there’s an emergency. It’s that simple!
New York Winter Packing Essentials For Your Dog
Aren’t you so excited to see NYC with your pup?! Make sure you read my post on Top 9 Luxury NYC Hotels That Allows Large Dogs and my Ultimate Guide to Dog-Friendly New York City. They are going to have such an amazing time! Here are a few packing essentials I recommend for them as well.
Musher’s Paw Wax
Make sure you rub paw wax on right before heading out to the streets. It acts like an invisible boot, forming a breathable shield against snow & salt.
Rain Jacket
If you have a dog with double-coated fur, you must pack a rain jacket for them. And don’t let the rain or sleet stop you and your dog from exploring! Put on the rain jacket and go out there to enjoy your travels!
GPS Health Tracker
Imagine your dog slipped from their collar and ran away in the city. How will you ever find your pup?! Not only is a Pet GPS tracker essential for travel, but it should also be a daily essential for your pup. I have my pup Gatsby wear this GPS tracker every time we go out.
Apple Air Tag
As a paranoid dog parent, I have an Apple Air tag as a backup if Gatsby’s GPS and Health Tracker battery is exhausted.
Pack Your Sense of Wonder
Now that you know what to pack for New York City winters, don’t forget to pack a sense of wonder and adventure. Winter in New York City is a magical time, so be open to experiencing the city’s holiday charm to the fullest!
With these packing essentials, you’ll be all set to soak in the festive magic and vibes in New York City. You’ll stay not only stylish but also cozy and well-prepared for whatever the city’s winter weather might throw your way.
